Horizon’s hydrogen fuel cells propel Singapore teams to victory at Shell Eco-Marathon Asia

SINGAPORE – July 11, 2011- A new breed of high-efficiency hydrogen fuel cells designed by Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies has propelled two student teams from Singapore, NUS and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, to the regional champions' podium at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia.

The high-profile event took place July 6-7 at the F1 circuit in Sepang, Malaysia, and brought together 94 student teams from 12 countries all over Asia. It challenges youth to design and build energy efficient vehicles that travel the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel.  The E-Mobility Class Hydrogen Award was won by the Ngee Ann Polytechnic in the Prototype category and by the National University of Singapore in the Urban Concept category. The NP-Distanza Proto team from the Ngee Ann Polytechnic set a new record in its class of 84.9 km/kWh.

The winning teams this year experimented with Horizon’s new 1kW hydrogen power solution, a highly efficient, compact fuel cell system that weighs only 3kg. Similar power systems can be designed into zero emission, hydrogen-electric vehicles of the future, and Horizon is clearly starting an innovation movement here in the region: “This year saw close to 10 competition-grade hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles designed by student teams from a number of different Asian countries.” declares Taras Wankewycz, Horizon’s co-founder. “We are extremely proud of the results achieved by all teams this year and will strive to do even better next year.” The Singapore-designed, award-winning hydrogen vehicles will be featured and on display at the upcoming Clean Energy Expo Asia, which takes place in November this year as part of the Energy Week in Singapore.
