US government $1M hydrogen storage prize

The US Department of Energy has announced a $1,000,000 prize to be given to a single organization which makes advances in hydrogen storage for light duty vehicles.

Samples will be tested by an independent third party laboratory and evaluated by judges, with the award being made in February 2011. The deadline for submitting material samples for testing is November 15, 2010.

The winner must exceed a number of targets, including a gravimetric capacity of above 7.5 per cent releasable hydrogen, at between -40 to +85 °C, and between 1.5 to 150 bar H2 pressure; volumetric capacity of above 70g per litre of releasable hydrogen; charging rates of above 0.0004g hydrogen per gram of material per second; discharge rates of above 0.00002g per gram of material per second; storage capacity must be over 95 per cent of original capacity after 100 cycles.
