Air Products has announced plans to build the world's largest gasification energy from waste facility, in Teeside, in the North of England. The waste products will be gasified, to form hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The hydrogen will then be put through a generator to make electricity. It will be able to generate around 50 MW, enough for 50,000 homes.
div align="justify"> The site has access to electrical distribution infrastructure and landfill disposal facilities. Air Products has secured the necessary environmental and planning approvals and the renewable energy facility is scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2014. Work has already begun to prepare the site. Full-scale construction activities will begin shortly. It will gasify up to 350,000 metric tons of non recyclable waste from the landfill every year. Air Products says it has "longstanding expertise in building and operating large-scale industrial gas and energy-related projects on a safe, reliable and cost-effective basis." There will be 700 construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs associated with the plant. It will use Westinghouse gasification technology provided by AlterNRG, which is more efficient and cleaner conversion of waste to power than "traditional" technologies, Air Products says. "Our investment in advanced gasification Energy From Waste (EFW) technology is a natural extension of our onsite business model. It allows us to further extend our leading position in the global energy market and continue to deliver on Air Products' commitment to sustainability," said John McGlade, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Air Products.
